Defenders Targeted
By: David | January 23rd, 2009Rumours are circulating that Norwich are monitoring the availability of two centre halves. 28 year old Lee Mair of Aberdeen and 23 year old Adrian Leijer an Australian on Fulham’s books.
Mair is out of contract in the close season and as such is able to talk to clubs now. Aberdeen have opened talks with him about a new deal but City hope to swoop. He has made 11 starts this season for the Dons and previously played in England for Stockport County.
Leijer (below) hasn’t featured for the Fulham first team since joined the club in August 2007 and boss Roy Hodgson thinks a loan move, where he’ll get regular games would suit. “It is important for him if we can’t give him those games to find somewhere where he can get games,” said Hodgson. “Whether it is either on loan or if necessary to find a club that’s prepared to really put him in the spotlight. He is not a young player, of course he is young but he is not academy age. We regard young players as the 18, 19, maximum 20 year-olds. Really we think that a player of 23 should be playing regular first team football. We can’t offer it to him here at the moment but we’re pleased with him. He is a very, very good character. He is a good player but he needs to play.”

Leijer’s attitude seems sound if his agent is to be believed. “He wants to play,” said Tom Brookes. “Both the club and he agree that he needs to play, so at some point during January we will get him out on loan and they (Fulham) will monitor him closely wherever he goes.”
With only the Ginger Pele and Jonathan Grounds as recognised centre halves, and Grounds having a 24 hour recall clause in his loan from Middlesboro due to kick in next month, defensive cover is a must.
