Neil Warnocks’ QPR held our Norwich heroes to a, far from, bore draw at Loftus Road yesterday. Both teams remain as they were on the Championship ladder. QPR’s lead at the top cut to four points from Cardiff with City maintaining third spot, seven points off QPR. Wes Hoolahan missed a penalty and Andrew Crofts cleared a effort off the line as both teams attacked. City signalled they would stick to the attacking philosophy that has payed dividends since lambert took over. Grant Holt saw an early close range effort well saved by Paddy Kenny as Holt swung in to toe poke towards the corner. Another attack saw Holt blasting the ball towards the roof of the net from an angle but Kenny’s wrists held fast. Morrocan magician Adel Taarabt was pulling Rangers’ strings in midfield and that man Holt showed in defence this time to charge down ex ipshit clown Helguson. With just under half an hour gone Clint Hill bundled over Holt and referee Penn correctly pointed to the spot. Hoolahan stepped up to convert the 12 yard given, but dragged his effort wide of Puddy Kenny’s post.
The second half ebbed and flowed with Rangers having perhaps the better chances but with the go to man Taarabt not hitting his efforts on target Warnock shuffled his deck and replaced him with Smith and Ephraim with Agyemang. Lambert responded by removing Hoolahan to bring on the out and out striker Chris Martin.
However neither team could find the elusive goal, meaning QPR still have to concede at home this season and City draw a blank in front of goal for the first away trip since October last year.

Attendance 18,059 (3155 City fans)

With ten games of the new season played it’s time to take a look at ticket sales through the Carrow Road box office

Season tickets were sold out, as for the past six seasons, before a ball was kicked this season. As the Club promise to have 25% of the stadium available for casual ticket sales and away team tickets, 20250 season tickets were available. Depending upon the away team and their request for tickets, the number of additional home seats that can be sold alters. The average home attendance this season is 24,572. That’s better than five premier league teams with only Derby’s 25,944 and Leeds’s 26,926 higher home attendances in the Championship this season.

Away attendances are also the envy of other clubs, although the miles travelled to get to away games is probably not! The average thus far for the season is 1,838 and is broken down as follows;

Scunthorpe 1,193 fans, Nottingham Forest 2,611, Doncaster (midweek) 1,098, Preston 1,697, Bristol City 1,305, QPR (October 16) 3,122 sell-out.

The average distance to these away matches is 173 miles.

All in all I believe this is an excellent display of loyal support by our fans which has been maintained through thick and thin of the past half a dozen seasons. Long may it continue. In Lambert We Trust.

Chris Sutton has stated that he’d love to be City boss one day, just days after quitting as Lincoln boss. Paul Lambert, saviour of our sanity, needn’t worry though as I’m pretty sure he is just about safe having guided us to the League 1 title last season and with the team perched nicely in third position in the Championship after 10 games.
Having been team mates at Celtic, perhaps Sutton may be interested in a coaching role back at his home Club and progress his managerial career.
I’d certainly love to see Sutton enjoy success and ultimately the fairytale would be at City. Having had legends such as Ian Butterworth and Ian Crook coach at the club as well as Gunny’s ill fated managerial spell, it’s important to ensure coaches are appointed by quality and suitability to the role rather than their illustrious Norwich City past.
Anyone got any ex players they’d like to see on the staff a Colney, and in what capacity?

The Club announced Paul Lambert as their new manager this morning following his resignation from Colchester United last night. The Champions League winner has signed a 12 month rolling contract with his brief a simple one; promotion back to the Championship this season.

Speculation that a replacement for Gunn had already been selected prior to his sacking isn’t dampened by the revelations on Colchester United’s own website. Their Chairman explains how City contacted him Saturday evening about offering Lambert the job here. and how compensation for Lambert’s services and getting a clause excluding any players moving to Carrow Road is ongoing.

When I heard Lambert announced I have to say I was pretty underwhelmed. However, as the day went on and I’ve found out more about him I’m growing in confidence. He knows the big occasions as a player having won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund defeating Zinedine Zidane’s Notts County (aka juventus). He captained Monaco and Celtic winning SPL titles, Scottish Cups, League Cups and a UEFA Cup final appearance. He also won 40 caps for Scotland, playing in the ‘98 World Cup in France.

Paul’s managerial career kicked off with Livingston in Scotland but he resigned after 8 months having only won two league games. June 2006 saw Lambert start to make his managerial mark with Wycombe Wanderers, City’s opponents this weekend. He took them to the League Cup semi final having knocked out Premier League teams Fulham and Charlton en route. Wycombe held Chelsea 1-1 in the first semi final leg before losing at Stamford Bridge. The team made the league play offs but were knocked out by Stockport County and Lambert resigned.

Then he replaced Geraint Williams at Colchester in October last year winning his first game against Wycombe and guiding the U’s to mid table 12th, only losing 9 games but drawing 19 and having 58 goals both for and against.

The recruitment process began in earnest for the press today with an announcement from the Borad that Chief Executive David McNally met with the Club’s number one target yesterday, having had permission from the club to speak to him.

“The process has started,” he said. “We have a short list of people that we’re interested in. I would also add that many, many people have applied for the position, but this is a head-hunting exercise rather than us interviewing people who have applied for the role. We have identified in order who we would like to see and we’ve focussed on our number one target.”

“I’ve met with him and we are in talks. Unfortunately, at this stage, I can’t confirm when he will be at the football club but I am confident that at some point as soon as possible we should be able to make a positive announcement. He is currently in employment at another football club.”

Thankfully this rules out the likes of Boothroyd, Kinnear, Dowie, Strachan and the like as he staes that the man in question is in employment at another English club. Obviously Mourinho and Prandelli are also ruled out by this admission, which is a shame!

Any thoughts on who it may be or who you would like to see would be interesting.

Scunthorpe’s Nigel Adkins would not appear to be on the list yet if their chairman is to be believed as he claims to have had no contact from City regarding their manager. I can’t see Winkelman allowing Paul Ince to leave MKDons again having only just returned to them this summer following his spell at Blackburn, and I’m not sure he would walk out on them again. I honestly can’t think of someone I’d love to have at the club apart from the aforementioned Prandelli!!

Norwich City today sensationally sacked manager Bryan Gunn on the eve of City’s first away league game of the season. The Club has only played two games this season. Admittedly they were a 7-1 home thrashing at the hands of also rans Colchester, the Club’s worst ever home defeat and the worst display of goalkeeping and defending ever witnessed in senior football. The second game was the 4-0 win over Yeovil in the first round of the League Cup. Although you can only beat what’s put in front of you, it was hardly a tough test.

I wasn’t in favour of Gunn’s appointment in the first place, but to sack him now having just assembled his own squad, and with every other decent manager in employment, is rather strange. Especially on the eve of the first away league game of the season.

The board have been decisive, but perhaps too decisive, too early. Considering the shambolic defending and midfield display of Saturday I’m surprised the entire coaching staff have remained if the manager has been fired. Obviously someone is required to prepare the team for tomorrows game, but I’d be pretty worried if I were Messrs Butterworth and Crook. Unless the board plan on offering them the position full time…

Attracting a replacement may prove difficult with such mayhem off the field and the board seemingly having an itchy trigger finger, so I would imagine they have a name or have made contact with someone regarding taking over prior to pulling the trigger on Gunn.

Trialists Jens Berthal Askou and Goran Maric have both signed permenent deals at Carrow Road today. Both players join on Bosman free transfers. Maric joins on a one year deal while Askou has signed for two years. Eleven players have now been signed on permanent deals this close season, really whetting the appetite for the coming season.

27 year old (in August) Askou began his career at Ikast FS before moving to Holstebro BK in 2002. In 2003 he joined 1st Division Silkeborg IF, following a successful trial. He helped the club regain promotion to the Danish Superliga during his first season. In 2007, Askou failed to agree a new deal with SIF, leading to a move to Turkish football with Kasımpaşa where he made 57 appearances.

Kasımpaşa finished bottom of the 2007–08 Süper Lig, with Askou scoring twice. However, despite Askou’s own goal in the play-offs semi-final, the club returned to the top flight at the first attempt in 2008–09. His contract was not renewed the following summer.
25 year old Goran Maric’s senior career began with Celta B in 2002 with whom he made 148 appearances scoring 49 times. During this time he also played on loan for Las Palmas six times without scoring and once for Celta Viga, also without scoring. Last season saw him on loan at Barcelona B making 33 appearances, scoring 11 goals. Whilst on trial at City Maric scored twice in three games and we look forward to more of the same when the season starts on 8 August.

Grant Holt joins for an estimated £400k (the fashionable ‘undisclosed fee’ strikes again) from Shrewsbury Town on a three year deal with the option of a fourth year held by the Club. With Bryan Gunn being linked with the player almost as soon as he took over the reigns it’s good to see Holt here as he brings a fine goal scoring pedegree coupled with desire to succeed

Indeed all eyes will be upon Grant when he makes his debut as he’s scored on every league club debut he’s made, Rochdale, Sheffield Wednesday, Notts Forest and Shrewsbury. He also scored on his debut at his first club, Barrow.

“Obviously this is a great opportunity for me as it’s a really good club. I had the chance to look around over the last couple of days to see all the facilities, and I think everyone knows they shouldn’t be in this predicament but unfortunately they are. I’m looking forward to playing a part in getting the Club back to where it should be. Forwards are paid to score goals and I’ve scored a lot in my career and I want to continue to so here. I can’t wait to get going and just throw myself into life as part of Norwich City. I just want to be successful and to do as well as I can, my aim is to score goals and get the team promoted. I know a few of the players here, I know Wes Hoolahan from Blackpool. I know a few, and met a few of them this morning and they all seem a good bunch. I spoke to Sammy Clingan before I came here and he sold the Club to me really, really well.”

So it seems Sammy helped us out before his move to Coventry, so thank you Sammy. Hopefully we’ll be seeing plenty of goals scored for City by Holt and some more awards for the player and the team too. With the 20 league goals from 43 games and another 8 goals from Cup competitions last season he earnt the top strikers’ mantle.
