Colchester 1-1 Norwich

By: Edward | December 19th, 2007

Jamie Cureton could barely disguise his delight - and frustration- regarding Norwich City’s late equaliser against Colchester last Saturday. Colchester’s McLeod scored in the 79th minute to make it look like a 1-0 defeat and I thought we were facing a relegation battle setback…swapping places with Colchester once more. But, ten minutes later on the 89th minute, Danny Granville scored an own goal…with former Colchester player Jamie Cureton nearest the ball. He could not contain his delight and rightly so. He was booed consistently for 90 minutes. What booing stamina! He said after the game “I expected to get booed but to be honest I am a little disappointed. For what I achieved at the club, I don’t think I expected it - to come here and get booed the whole 90 minutes.” He finished off his comments by saying, in a striker’s gladiatorial fashion, if they don’t respect me I won’t respect them!

Most people regarded the game itself as a rotten, toiling, drab affair where neither side showed any sparkle. A typical championship relegation battle a cynic would say. The one promising thing that did come out of it was Norwich’s willingness to fight and toil in a winter Layer Road subsumed with gloominess and cold. This could prove to be a vital result really, we didn’t slip back down back into the relegation places…swapping places with Colchester twice in two weeks would have been frustrating after having done so well to be undefeated in five games out of six. That is promising we kept at it till the very end and gained our rewarded point. Its important for the trip to Scunthorpe to be still in there, fourth from bottom, amongst it all.

At least we’re off to a nice holiday now - with that win Norwich is now 18th! Hopefully this form continues and Roeder’s trackrecord at clubs will change for the better for City.
